Gay or What?

Queen Latifah
"My personal life is personal and its really not for everyone else. With what I do for a living, I have to share a lot of myself with a lot of people, but I'm not going to share everything. They want to make up stories and make me gay all the time and it's like, 'Keep running with it.' I've definitely been annoyed by it, but I learned a long time ago that it was pointless to say anything. Everybody else can do the reading; I'll do the living."

– Grammy winner Queen Latifah spoke to writer Regina Robertson for a recentEssence magazine cover story regarding rumors about her sexuality.

News: Roxanne Shauntay’s PHD is a Big, Fat Lie

So you'll recall the whole Roxanne Shante gets a Ph.D. from Cornell and makes her record company pay for it; because she had the foresight to put a 'you agree to pay for my education for life' clause in her contract story, right? Well, it was all a hoax. Slate.com decided dig beyond the warm fuzzies and into the fuzziness they saw in Shante's tale. The results of their reporting are downright depressing:

Virtually everything about the Daily News' heartwarming "projects-to-Ph.D." story appears to be false.
An investigation by Slate has revealed:
* According to Warner, neither it nor any of its subsidiary record labels ever had a contract with Shanté, and it was not obligated to pay for her education. Indeed, there's no evidence that it ever did.
* Shanté-real name Lolita Shanté Gooden-doesn't have a Ph.D. from Cornell or anywhere else. Indeed, she admitted it in an interview with Slate. And Cornell has no record of Gooden (or "Shanté") ever attending or receiving a degree.
