Dr Boyce Lays Down Economic Advice for Rappers
Hip-Hop Wired’s Michael “Ice-Blue” Harris recently sat down with scholar Dr. Boyce Watkins. The Syracuse University Financial Professor and advocate for African-Americans obtaining education and economic empowerment and warrior against racial injustice goes in on a few topics affecting Black America in the first of many insightful interviews.
HipHopWired: As far as Hip-Hop is concerned, you’ve been one of the people who….you’re part of the Hip-Hop generation, you speak to the Hip-Hop generation without criticizing but you do point out some of the things that are wrong. What are some of the changes you think we as men need to step up and do with the music?
Boyce Watkins: We need to stop being high paid hoes and learn how to be pimps. The truth is that…I actually wrote an article about this literally three days ago. Basically I created a hypothetical conversation between a rapper, a hypothetical rapper named Cash Money and the record label. Basically, Cash Money’s going to the executive and he’s saying, “Oh I know that my last album, Booties, Hoes and Bitches did real well on the charts but I’ve been thinking that this stuff’s not positive and I want to do something more positive next time, so I’m gonna do an album called Studying, Homework and Better Grades…” or something like that. I was just being silly so the executive is basically saying, “You know that’s a great idea Cash Money, I really feel ya dawg but the thing is that Booties, Hoes and Bitches sold two million copies last time and our projections show that the people who follow you, they want more booties, extra hoes and many more bitches so we’re thinking that that would be a great album title for your next release.

TI and Tupac: What do they have in common?
We all know that the rapper TI recently began his 366 day prison sentence in an Arkansas prison. Merged with the brilliance of TI is the darker side of his existence, the part that makes him willing to risk losing his family and freedom in the midst of all of the chaos in the hip hop industry.
In this conversation for The Bottom Line with Dr. Boyce, we discuss the broader meaning behind TI's arrest, as well as how TI's experience reflects the state of rap music in America. There is also the question of whether or not "keeping it real" is actually good business, and whether TI is actually remorseful for his personal choices.
We can broaden the discussion to other issues in hip hop as well: Is it right that Rick Ross has been penalized for not being a criminal? Does TI have a lot in common with Tupac (beyond the fact that they are both talented artists)? If so, how can he be sure to avoid Tupac's fate? We explore all this and more.

Dr Boyce and Charlamagne: Was it right for the Mob to Beat the Alleged Rapist?
Today, "Charlamagne Tha God" (morning host for 100.3 The Beat, Philadelphia) and I discussed the case in which Jose Carrasquillo, a man wanted for raping an 11-year old girl, was caught and beaten into critical condition by a mob of people from a Philadelphia neighborhood. The mob held the alleged perpetrator until police arrived and the Philadelphia police department is now compiling evidence to show that Carrasquillo was indeed the man they were looking for.
When is vigilante justice acceptable and when has it gone over the line? Did the mob do the right thing or should they be prosecuted for their behavior?
"While mob violence is never inherently preferable to formal justice, black women have never been the beneficiaries of government protection," says Dr. Marc Lamont Hill of Columbia University, who was born and raised in Philadelphia. "Although the police were clearly on the case, the community nonethless had a reasonable fear that justice would not prevail without a slight push and kick."
Cooperating with police is critical if we are to get crimes solved in our neighborhoods, and standing up for our children is the best way to ensure that our kids remain safe. As much as we don't want to support the idea of mob justice, the truth is that there is a difference between legality and morality, especially when faced with daunting levels of crime in many black and brown neighborhoods across America. My father always said that he would gladly go to prison to save his children and I don't think that made him a bad father.
"It's a shame that it had to come to the community taking justice in their own hands, but what do you do when you are ignored and made second class?" said hip hop artist and community activist Vigalantee, who has seen his own Kansas City, KS community devastated by gun violence.

Snoop Diggity Breaks it all Down
My momma gave me the name. I used to love Peanuts and Charlie Brown -- Snoopy was my favorite cartoon character growing up. I watched so much, I started to look like him.
A lot of people like to fool you and say that you're not smart if you never went to college, but common sense rules over everything. That's what I learned from selling crack.
Love goes unappreciated a lot of times, but you still gotta keep giving it.
The first time I got high off marijuana was in the seventies, with one of my uncles. They had these little roaches on the table -- these part-way-smoked marijuana cigarettes -- and there was some Schlitz Malt Liquor Bull. I went in there and sipped the Schlitz, and my uncle asked me did I wanna hit that roach. And I was like, "Yeah." He put it on the roach clip for me and lit it up, and I hit that motherfucker. I was about eight or nine years old.
Weed: It makes me feel the way I need to feel.

In case you don’t know, this is huge. Funkmaster Flex, a DJ on Hot 97 in New York, said that he wants to ban Interscope artists. That means that Eminem and Dr. Dre would be out of the rotation. Flex had this to say:
“Like I told you, Interscope Records is a label,” Funkmaster Flex explained on his show. “They have G-Unit—they have 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo. They haveAkon’s label too…A lot of your favorite artists New York, but let me tell you something. That label is trying to make some decisions. Nino, let me tell you something Nino. Russell Simmons Speaks to Dr. Boyce Watkins, New York Times About His RushCard
From Dr. Boyce Watkins
To the YourBlackWorld family: Some of you saw my recent critique of the RushCard, the new prepaid debit card issued by Russell Simmons. Some took my article about the RushCard and interview about the Rushcard on BBC World news and The New York Times to imply that I have serious problems with the way Russell Simmons does business. While I do not feel that Russell, nor anyone else, is above being critiqued by the Black community, it should be made clear that I respect much of Simmons’ work, especially what he has done to reduce the severity of the drug laws that incarcerate so many Black men across America.
I must admit that I’ve been disturbed by the recent trend of African American urban role models lending themselves out to companies such as Rent-a-Center to encourage people of color to participate in arguably one-sided financial transactions. But I must be clear when I say that the RushCard is not necessarily a bad deal for those who need it. My greatest challenge to President Obama is to find ways to ensure that all Americans have access to basic services, such as bank accounts, so they are not forced to pay high fees in order to access their own money. I cannot endorse an argument which states that Russell is necessarily a philanthropist (as his ads claim) because his company provides an option that improves upon the horrific options already in place. So, while I agree 100% that the RushCard is better than check cashing venues in the Black community, my greatest concern is that many members of the urban poor are still paying the high cost of poverty in America. It is my hope that Russell sincerely fulfills his role as philanthropist, leader and financial enabler by genuinely working to solve critical liquidity and financial literacy problems in urban America. I have complete faith that he can accomplish whatever he puts his mind to.
So, out of fairness to Russell, I want all of you to see his response to the New York Times piece, which is written below. My goal is not to think for you, it’s to encourage you to think for yourself.

Jamie Foxx Gets Heat for his Words About Miley Cirus
Jamie Foxx Might be in trouuuuuble!
The 41-year-old’s foul outburst was prompted by a caller to the show who brought up a month-old story in which Cyrus pledged to “ruin” Radiohead after the rockers rejected a request to meet with the Disney star backstage at the Grammys.
“Who is Miley Cyrus?” an incredulous Foxx, who has a teenage daughter of his own, said. “The one with all the gums? She gotta get a gum transplant…S–t.”
The insults didn’t stop there. Or get less personal.
“She’s gonna ruin Radiohead’s career? The same Radiohead that gets paid a million dollars just to sample their songs?
“Make a sex tape and grow up,” he continued. “Get like Britney Spears and do some heroin. Do like Lindsay Lohan and start seeing a lesbian and get some crack in your pipe. Catch chlamydia on a bicycle seat.
“That’s what I want.” E Online
Miley’s dad, Billy Ray, is particularly upset, according to the source.
“He thinks Jamie was out of line and didn’t find any humor in it,” the source told me this afternoon. “He doesn’t understand why he would do that to Miley, especially since he has teenage daughter himself.” E Online
Foxx noted to Jay Leno that he was doing a routine, saying: “Sometimes as comedians, you know, we go a little too far.”

Hip Hop News: Officer Rick Ross Tries to Defend His Corrections Officer Past
When MTV News had the chance to listen to Rick Ross' Deeper Than Rap on Monday, two things stood out to us immediately about the much-discussed track"Valley of Death": It does not feature Lil Wayne as advertised, at least not on the album, which is due out on April 21. But Ross does speak briefly on his controversial stint as a prison guard.
"N---a never had a gun and badge," he stresses, dismissing the word that he was indeed an officer of the law. "Can't criticize n---as trying to get a job."
Later he implies that while he was working as a corrections officer, he was also on the streets, declaring that he had "two jobs."
"I'll C.O. so we could bow our head and pray over the meatloaf," Ross rhymes. "You can label me the biggest label in the game."

Lady Drama: Bow Wow Rappin About Sunshine
I’m not feeling Bow Wow’s Sunshine, but I’ll let you judge for yourself. He seems to be coming off like a shorter, younger, less talented and broker version of TI (remember that song “You can have it all”? Don’t that sound like “You can have whatever you like?”). Also, the video seems a bit on the low budget side, since Bow Wow shoots the whole damn video from his trailer (WTF?).

Do You Remember MC Eiht? This Groupie Does
Remember MC Eiht? He’s the dude from Compton’s Most Wanted who also starred in the movie Menace 2 Society about 100 years ago. Well, apparently his girlfriend is putting him on blast for not being able to get it up during sex. Here is what she had to say:
“[MC] Eiht has a problem. With his penis – it doesn’t work. He can’t get it up for some reason.
He said it’s because he f*cked so many b*tches back in the day, when he really had it going on. You know how n*ggas got it going on, they got all this money, they rappers, they f*ck 2 and three b*tches a day.
Well apparently that makes your d*ck stop working, ‘cause that’s what happened to [MC] Eiht.”
But then again, maybe she is putting it on him that she can’t get him excited enough to want to do it! Anyway, if you want to find out why people used to pay attention to this dude back in the day, click on the link below to watch one of his videos.

Black News: Kanye West Appears on South Park
Kanye West appeared on the cartoon “Southpark”. Here is what he had to say:
“SOUTH PARK MURDERED ME LAST NIGHT AND IT’S PRETTY FUNNY. IT HURTS MY FEELINGS BUT WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM SOUTH PARK! I ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN WORKING ON MY EGO THOUGH. HAVING THE CRAZY EGO IS PLAYED OUT AT THIS POINT IN MY LIFE AND CAREER. I USE TO USE IT TO BUILD UP MY ESTEEM WHEN NOBODY BELIEVED IN ME. NOW THAT PEOPLE DO BELIEVE AND SUPPORT MY MUSIC AND PRODUCTS THE BEST RESPONSE IS THANK YOU INSTEAD OF “I TOLD YOU SO!!!” IT’S COOL TO TALK SHIT WHEN YOU’RE RAPPING BUT NOT IN REAL LIFE. WHEN YOU MEET LITTLE WAYNE IN PERSON HE’S THE NICEST GUY FOR EXAMPLE. I JUST WANNA BE A DOPER PERSON WHICH STARTS WITH ME NOT ALWAYS TELLING PEOPLE HOW DOPE I THINK I AM. I NEED TO JUST GET PAST MYSELF. DROP THE BRAVADO AND JUST MAKE DOPE PRODUCT. EVERYTHING IS NOT THAT SERIOUS. AS LONG AS PEOPLE THINK I ACT LIKE A BITCH THIS TYPE OF SHIT WILL HAPPEN TO ME. I GOT A LONG ROAD AHEAD OF ME TO MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE I’M NOT ACTUALLY A HUGE DOUCHE BUT I’M UP FOR THE CHALLENGE. I’M SURE THE WRITERS AT SOUTH PARK ARE REALLY NICE PEOPLE IN REAL LIFE. THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO DRAW MY CREW. THAT WAS PRETTY FUNNY ALSO!! I’M SURE THERE’S GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN THIS… THAT’S HOW YOU KNOW IT’S ME!”

He’s Baaaaaack!!!!!
Yup, Eminem is back and released a new video today titled "We Made You." In it, Em disses everyone from Kim Kardashian, Amy Winehouse, and Lindsay Lohan, to name just a few. One of his most controversial lines revolve around his lust for Sarah Palin.
" Give me my Ventolin Inhaler and 2 Xenadrine
And I'll invite Sarah Palin out to dinner then,
nail her. Babe say hello to my lil friend"
Em is definitely going to piss some people off!
Its been almost a decade since the Marshall Mathers LP was released. His new album, Relapse, is set to be released May 19.

The Big 3 Hang Out in Las Vegas
Eminem, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent are legendary rappers in their own right, yet the three icons recently joined forces during a recording session in the studio at the Palms.
The resort’s owner, George Maloof, said the trio had the loudest recording sessions the casino has ever heard.
“I think it’s the only time that we’ve had anybody in our studio where you could actually hear the sound through the walls,” he said.
“The room … is four rooms in one,” he explained. “It’s, like, impossible to hear through the walls – except for those guys.”
A number of the resort’s musically-inclined A-list guests have used the studio in the past. Usher used it to the lay down a few tracks during his last visit – yet no sound escaped when the R&B star used it.
Maloof credited Eminem, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent’s high volume to the enhanced equipment the rappers imported for the 3-week-long project.

Michael Vick Gets a Big Fat “HAYELL NAW” from the Bankruptcy Judge
Fallen NFL star Michael Vick told a bankruptcy judge Friday that he became a changed man in prison and is determined to do all the right things upon his release from prison, including repaying his creditors with the millions he hopes to resume earning in professional football.
But after more than three hours of testimony in which Vick laid out what he called his "exit strategy," U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Frank J. Santoro rejected it. Santoro told Vick to draft a new Chapter 11 plan, one with a bit more certainty.
Santoro said there is no guarantee the league will have the 28-year-old player back, and suggested he start on a new plan by considering liquidating one or both of his Virginia homes and three cars he had planned to keep.

So it has just been announced that there will not be anymore issues of KING Magazine, and the company claims that the economy is to blame for its demise. I know there are going to be a lot of men up set about this so they better cop the last issue which will hit stands April 21st. The last issue will feature Joe Buddens girlfriend Tahiry, and she has enough ass to fill at least two issues, so this should keep the men satisfied for a few months.

Bill O’Reilly Pays for His Racism: Loses Major Dough
After the national protests by YourBlackWorld.com, ThinkProgress.org and ColorofChange.org, UPS is finally getting the point. Recently, the company sent out an email stating that they are no longer going to advertise on The O’Reilly Factor.
Bill O’Reilly harassed Dr. Boyce Watkins last year in an effort to have him fired from Syracuse University for speaking against his racism during the Obama Campaign. Watkins had also called for a boycott of Bill O’Reilly’s corporate sponsors. Keith Olbermann later supported Watkins, stating that O’Reilly’s attacks were unwarranted and that everything that Watkins said was true.
Read the email below:
Thank you for sending an e-mail expressing concern about UPS advertising during the Bill O’Reilly show on FOX News. We do consider such comments as we review ad placement decisions which involve a variety of news, entertainment and sports programming. At this time, we have no plans to continue advertising during this show.

Diddy Accused of Hating Dark-Skinned Women
According to a reader that I’ve been corresponding with this afternoon, she received an email for a Ciroc Vodka casting but was disappointed after reading she did not meet the requirements. As she continued to read the casting ad she became outraged and appalled as she was excluded from the job for being neither a white, hispanic or light skinned African American female. This led her to believe that Diddy does not like dark skinned African American woman. (To his credit, he’s making babies by them…)
My Question is this: Why did it take so long for someone to call Diddy out on this? If you look up the commercials for his “Unforgivable” and “I Am King” cologne, you will notice that Diddy has rarely (if at all) used dark skinned nor African American woman in those ads. For his Sean John ads, he employed both Cassie and Lauren London who are both light skinned women.
Check out Exhibit A,B,C,D,E & F below…
I’m not saying that it’s right but no one has complained about it before. Check out the reader’s complaint letter to Ciroc plus the Casting Call below:

CHARLAMAGNE THA GOD SPEAKS UP AND OUT
You people kill me. When I say people I mean the so called new media; the bloggers and websites who have taken it upon themselves to be the so called journalists of this generation. I say so called because many of you are not journalists at all. In fact there is no journalistic integrity in 95% of the bullshit yall report. All you do is take rumors, gossip and down right lies and report them as fact. Think of all the blog rumors you have ever read. Do any of these blogs ever get proven as fact? I'm sure a few do, but when I say a few it's only about 5% because as I stated earlier 95% of what's reported is bullshit. There is no investigative journalism that goes into your stories. If I call a blogger right now and say, "Yo, I heard such and such got beat up last night," they will say, "Word?" "Let me make a few calls." Within minutes on their blog you see there is a rumor on there that says "Such and Such got beat up last night." What investigative journalism did you do to insure that "such and such" really did get beat up last night? You didn't do any research because you don't care about journalism. You care about getting your story up before necolebitchie.com or gyantscoop.com. You are more concerned with generating traffic to your blog or website than you are about reporting a factual story. That's the problem with the game today; if video killed the radio star then the Internet killed the journalist.
You know what our culture needs more of? We need more real journalists to write blogs. We need more real activist and intellectual thinkers like Boyce Watkins and Michael Eric Dyson to do video blogs and talk about the issues that effect our people on a daily basis. Think of all the hits that sites like mediatakeout.com and bossip.com get. There comes a point when you have to ask yourself why there is not more positive content on these sites? Why aren't real issues being addressed? How come everyone cares about Chris Brown whipping Rihanna's ass? Is it right for a man to hit a woman? Hell no? Does it happen on a daily basis, hell yeah! I've put my foot up a female's ass a couple times (when I was younger and believe me I got bad karma for it) but what is the issue? Or you blog sites and websites reporting it because your trying to make people realize that domestic violence is and issue that needs to be addressed or is your site just reporting it because it's Chris Brown and Rihanna?

Mexican Drug Lord on Forbes Billionaire List
What do software mogul Bill Gates and banking investor Warren Buffett have in common with wanted Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera?
Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera, pictured in 1993, ranks 701th on Forbes' yearly report on billionaires.
They are all featured in Forbes magazine's world's billionaires report as "self-made" billionaires.
Guzman Loera, whose nickname means Shorty, escaped from a Mexican prison in 2001. He heads the powerful Sinaloa cartel, investigators say. Authorities on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border blame the Sinaloa and other cartels for a surge in violence in the region.
He ranked 701th on Forbes' yearly report, with an estimated fortune of $1 billion.
Mexican Attorney General Eduardo Medina Mora expressed outrage at the publication and described Forbes' calculations on Guzman Loera's fortune as mere "speculation."
"I will never accept that a criminal could be recognized as someone distinguished, even if it is by a magazine like Forbes," Medina Mora said to local media during a drug traffic summit Thursday in Vienna, Austria.
